Self-determination theory for instructional design

Self-determination theory for instructional design: The effects and interrelations of basic psychological need support on learning with static and dynamic digital learning materials (SDT4ID)

Project Duration: 2024 - 2027

The SDT4ID-project aims to investigate how digital learning materials can effectively fulfill the students' basic psychological needs – autonomy, competence, and relatedness – based on the Self-determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017). Through two sets of experiments to be conducted in Swiss secondary schools, we aim to pinpoint design strategies that enhance students' perception of these needs, assess their influence on learning outcomes, and examine the relationships between various design options. We will analyze both material-based and external features across static and dynamic digital media to understand their efficacy. The results will help to develop motivational approaches to designing digital learning materials.
