Research project

SNF project RATINGS: The impact of observer training on the quality of classroom assessments

Because successful student learning and development is largely dependent on the quality of the teaching, there has been a great deal of research into understanding which factors might contribute to high quality teaching and how this can be assessed in teacher education and training. This research has often relied on observations by trained observers, making it vitally important that the observation data are valid and reliable. Unfortunately, there is evidence that the data obtained by observation studies are neither, even when trained observers are used. Whether the validity and reliability of observations could be improved by having a targeted selection of observers (e.g., based on their expertise or personality traits) or optimizing observer training (e.g., by means of the length or content orientation) has not yet been systematically investigated. The RATINGS study aims to remedy this situation. A total of 360 students and teachers will be assessed in four experimental and qualitative supplementary studies at four locations (Zurich, St. Gallen, Kiel, Hamburg). The results should provide more detailed information about how teaching quality can best be assessed by observers.
