Previous research in vocational education has primarily focused on professional skills, while the development of social skills has been studied much less frequently. In a systematic literature review, we first presented the construct of social competence (Findeisen et al., in press) and presented initial empirical findings of VET students’ socio-emotional skills at the annual conference of the American Educational Research Association (Holtsch et al., 2022). Among other things, the review made it clear that the construct of “social skills” is conceptualized differently and that constructs are often given the same name but cover different aspects. This in-depth project aims to describe in greater detail a method for assessing students' self-reported socio-emotional skills in basic commercial vocational training. To this end, an instrument by Velasquez et al. (2020) was adapted and used in an online survey of learners in Switzerland. In the first step, the scales are tested for validity characteristics (American Educational Research Association (AERA) et al., 2014). In the second step, initial results of the reported facets of socio-emotional skills are reported. The data comes from the completed IBH project «Digital education – The role of digital activities in the development of social competence and civic participation in a comparison of formal and non-formal educational contexts. |
