In 2008, the department for upper secondary and vocational education of the Canton of Zurich (Mittelschul- und Berufsbildungsamt des Kantons Zürich, MBA) commissioned Prof. Dr. Regula Kyburz-Graber to review the current scientific literature on self-regulated learning (SRL) and to develop adequate tools for school administration, teachers, and students.
In detail, Prof. Kyburz-Graber and her team compiled a short description of an ideal type of SRL based on experiences and normative values, summarized the current German and English scientific literature about SRL and identified 11 core dimensions of SRL and developed a tool for reflective self-evaluation of SRL processes, addressed to students and supplemented by a guideline for teachers.
These documents are a first milestone in a major project of the educational authorities of the Canton of Zurich to enhance self-regulated learning and transferable skills at upper secondary level (2008-2011). All 20 upper secondary schools (grammar schools) in the Canton of Zurich are taking an active part in the project by developing SRL programmes and integrating them into their school curriculum (2009-2011).
For this, all schools were given individual feedback on their current SRL practice and possible areas for school development. The main findings of the summary report analyzing all 221 online questionnaires filled in by teachers in early 2009 are: Most teaching units described took place in regular class (65%) and lasted between 6-14 lessons (34%) and 15-30 lessons (36%). Often, students and teachers shared the process supervision (71%), less frequently the assessment (41%). In 63% of the cases, students were asked to reflect on their learning process. Focus for school development and development of teaching with respect to SRL could be: increasing student responsibility in regulating the learning process (e.g., having sole responsibility to look for and judge learning materials), increasing students’ involvement in developing and applying assessment criteria, and increasing the quality of reflection by developing suitable tools.
From the pool of teaching units described by the survey participants, the department for upper secondary and vocational education of the Canton of Zurich (MBA) compiled a Catalogue of Good Practice Examples for SRL.
Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Regula Kyburz-Graber was also commissioned to develop teacher in-service training for SRL.
