Historische Entwicklung, aktueller Stand und Zukunftsperspektiven der Umweltbildung in der Schweiz, im Besonderen in der Region Basel / Historical development, current situation and perspectives of environmental education in Switzerland, in particular in the region of Basel

Environmental education is one of the most important strategies of far-sighted nature and environment protection concepts. However little is known about its origin and its nearly 100 years of history in the region of Basel where nature protection policy began already in 1910. The project analyzed the historical background of environmental education in order to understand in its success and deficits more depth. Analysis of documents on nature protection pioneers, biographic interviews with living pioneers and experts of environmental education and a survey with teachers about the current environmental education in school were carried out. The questionnaire asked teachers of lower and upper secondary schools in the region of Basel about their views concerning the gap between knowledge and action, the nature of environmental problems and priorities and effectiveness of environmental strategies and education. Using the outcomes, aspects of a socio-ecological environmental education are discussed and strategies will be worked out for future school initiatives with respect to sustainable development and Local Agenda 21.
